Punishment: A Multi-Disciplinary Study of Its Theoretical and Policy Dimensions

To construct, analyze, and appraise philosophical, sociological, economic and legal accounts of the nature, effects and legitimacy of criminal punishment, using these accounts to formulate converging lines of argument in support of policy recommendations such as decriminalization and deprisoning. To conduct a multi-disciplinary humanities investigation of punishment and to clarify for participants, students, correctional officials and the general public the contribution of the humanities to the illumination and resolution of a problem having practical and contemporary significance. To intitiate a multi-disciplinary program at the University to study crime punishment.
