Storage Upgrade Project

The purchase of storage supplies, furniture, and environmental monitoring equipment and the training of staff to improve the care of the museum's 2000 artifacts, which date from the 18th through the 20th century and document Native American, Mission, and Rancho life in southern California.

As part of Mission San Juan Capistrano's Five-Year Strategic Plan, the museum facilities will be upgraded and the collections preserved. To this end, the Mission recently participated in the Conservation Assessment Program (CAP), hiring the conservator John Griswold to carry out a general conservation assessment. One of the high-priority recommendations made by Mr. Griswold in his final report included upgrading storage facilities. If awarded, this grant will cover an initial, yet very important phase of improving collections storage by providing cabinetry and shelving, preservation supplies, environmental monitoring equipment, and training.
