Archives Relocation and Records Restoration Project HURRICANE KATRINA EMERGENCY GRANT
The Archdiocese of New Orleans comprises 151 parishes and missions, all containing sacramental records and other significant archives documenting parish life. In addition, the Archdiocesan Archives, housed in three buildings in New Orleans, hold records documenting the life of the greater New Orleans community from colonial times to the present. These archives are extensively used by scholars from throughout the United States as well as from Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa. The archives include early records of baptisms, marriage, and deaths, newspapers, legal and administrative records, court cases, and one of the most extensive antebellum religious correspondence files in the South. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina the parish, mission, and archdiocesan records were damaged by water and sludge, and many were completely destroyed. Thirty parishes were so devastated that they are not back in operation. The archdiocese has relocated its own archives and staff to temporary facilities in the Diocese of Baton Rouge and is now determining the location and condition of parish and mission records in order to carry out assessment and treatment.
