Graduate Education in the Preservation of Historic, Ethnographic, and Decorative Arts Objects, Furniture, Textiles and Photos

Graduate education in the conservation of humanities collections. Support would be provided for guest lecturers and stipends for nine students over two years specializing in the conservation of objects, textiles, furniture, photographs, or works on paper.

This proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanities seeks $200,000 to support the education and training of nine Master's-level students over a two-year period. Grant funds will provide stipends for fellows in the disciplines of painted decorative surfaces, objects, furniture, paper, photographs, or textiles. Many of these students may also minor in preventive conservation. We also request that a portion of the cost of honoraria for special guest lecturers in these disciplines be funded. To date, the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation has trained 334 professional conservators in the examination, analysis, treatment, and stabilization of art and artifacts, as well as the general principles of collections' care. Trained professionals are essential to the survival of our material heritage, and NEH support of the education and training for our students will help to ensure that such professionals are available.
