Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (Harbor Springs, MI 49740-9692)
Eric Hemenway (Project Director: May 2015 to September 2017)
Archives Preservation Assessment Project

Hiring a consultant to undertake a preservation assessment of a collection comprising 160,000 documents, 3,000 images and 250 artifacts that document the northern Michigan Odawa tribe‚Äôs history and culture. Primary sources include manuscripts, correspondence, newspapers, and historic photographs that document Native American experiences with boarding schools, military service, political activism and treaty rights, as well as family histories.  Dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, the collections are used for tribal research, exhibitions, and for educational programming.  The consultant would develop a long-range preservation plan as well as a plan to move the collections to a new facility in 2016.

The LTBB Archives Department (Archives) maintains nine collections that comprise over 160,000 documents, 3,000 images and 250 artifacts. The collections are a critical resource for public uses including articles, presentations and exhibits. Through the years our collection has grown exponentially; however, the space utilized to preserve the collections has not. A consultant with expertise in the areas of assessing and rehousing collections is needed. Activities include hiring and collaborating with a consultant to review our archives, develop a long-range preservation plan, and develop a rehousing plan. The goal is to improve Archives' ability to preserve and care for the significant cultural archives that sustain the Odawa's heritage. By the end of the 18-month project period, Archives will have a long-range preservation plan for the care and sustainability of the Archives' collections and detailed plans to improve storage of, and rehouse, the collections in Archives' future site.
