Preserving and Storing Oversized Materials in the Department of Archives and Special Collections

The purchase of shelving and preservation supplies for rehousing 300 linear feet of oversized maps, drawings, photographs, posters, and broadsides pertaining to the history and culture of Mississippi.  Materials include documentation on major literary figures from Mississippi, notably William Faulkner; civil rights activities and activists, including James Meredith and Fanny Lou Hamer; and blues music and musicians, including B. B. King.

The University of Mississippi's Department of Archives and Special Collections' significant holdings include historical papers; original manuscripts and rare photographs of many of Mississippi's literary giants; the papers of civil rights icons and propaganda of segregationists; audio recordings of blues artists; maps from Mississippi's territorial period, and more. An NEH Preservation Assistance Grant is requested to purchase and install additional shelving and supplies for the storage, preservation, and improved organization of approximately 300 linear feet of oversize items in the University of Mississippi Library's Department of Archives and Special Collections. Without this additional shelving and supplies, as many as 3,000 posters, maps, blueprints, broadsides, and oversize photograph prints documenting the University and state of Mississippi's history, blues music, film history, are at risk of damage from current inadequate conditions.
