Storefront for Art and Architecture (New York, NY 10012-4506)
Chialin Chou (Project Director: 05/05/2015 to present)

Storefront Archive Preservation Assessment

Hiring consultants to draft a preservation plan and the purchase of preservation supplies to rehouse the paper and photographic collections of the Storefront for Art and Architecture. The archive’s records document the organization’s exhibitions, performances, events, and annual benefits. Archival collections include extensive programming and research files, as well as 700 pieces of original artwork. These artworks were produced by program participants for exhibitions and events, and include pieces by Shirin Neshat, Dan Graham, and Vito Acconci. The collections are used by artists, curators, researchers, students, and the public. The material is also used in exhibitions, both in Storefront’s own space and via loans to other institutions.

Storefront for Art & Architecture respectfully requests NEH funding to support a preservation assessment of the paper-based and photographic media held in its archive, and for purchasing storage furniture and large format archival supplies as recommended by the project's lead preservation consultant. As one of the first alternative spaces in the U.S. dedicated to presenting innovative work at the intersection of art and architecture, Storefront has accumulated archival records documenting its diverse and influential program of over 280 exhibitions and affiliated performances, lectures, publications and events dating from its founding in 1982. Featuring the work of 1,500+ architects, artists and designers, this material includes a collection of original artwork and over 107 lf of programming documents, photographic prints and negatives, audiovisual media, newsletters and publications that together constitute a unique, underrepresented repository of national significance.
