Developing a Preservation and Storage Plan for the Humanities Collections of the Pasadena Museum of History

Hiring a consultant to conduct a preservation assessment of the archives of the Pasadena Museum of History. Holdings include prints, negatives, slides, glass plates, stereographs, and postcards; photo albums and scrapbooks; special collections; manuscripts; maps; ephemera; books; periodicals and newspapers; and city directories. These materials range in date from the 1850s to the present and relate to the history and culture of the city of Pasadena, California.

The Pasadena Museum of History proposes to hire a consultant to conduct a preservation needs assessment of the portion of its historical collections currently stored in the museum's History Center. The museum holds humanities collections of significance to the history of Pasadena, the San Gabriel Valley, and southern California. The collections are divided into three main categories: archives; costume and textiles; and artifacts, also encompassing fine and decorative arts. The archives contains an estimated one million items; the costume and textile collection contains about 3,000 pieces; and the art and artifact collection consists of approximately 50 paintings and 500 objects. The proposed assessment will offer specific recommendations to address both short-term remedial storage and environmental improvements to the storage area as well as provide a framework for developing a long-term plan to increase storage capacity within the history center.
