Madison County Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan

The services of a consultant to develop a disaster preparedness and response plan for the county's historical records, dating to the late 18th century. These materials, measuring 735 cubic feet, include property deeds, military enlistment and appointment records (some preceding the War of 1812), court documents, election returns, and other sources used in exhibitions, publications, family history research, and public programs.

Madison County is requesting a Preservation Assistance Grant for $5,200, the fee for a consultant to develop a detailed Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan tailored for the County's archival collections. Because of current storage space limitations, these collections are stored at two different sites. One site is in the County's remote storage in the basement of the Madison County Office Building; the other is a secured vault in the basement of the adjacent County Veteran's building. The plan will document potential threats for serious damage to records contained in storage sites, recommend ways to avoid or minimize the impact of a disaster and ways to handle the negative results of a disaster. In addition to addressing issues related to the collections, concerns for providing safety for county employees, researchers and other visitors will be considered.
