Bank Street College of Education (New York, NY 10025-1898)
Lindsey Wycoff (Project Director: May 2012 to September 2014)
Rehousing the Bank Street College Archives

The purchase of preservation supplies for a collection that documents administrative activities, teaching, research, and outreach programs of the Bank Street College of Education and its predecessor, the Bureau of Educational Experiments, from its founding in 1916 through the present. The College was an early leader in research on child development and teacher education. The archival collection includes approximately 650 linear feet of documents, photographs, artifacts, and audiovisual materials related to the history of progressive education in the United States, including the development of the Head Start program.

The funds from this grant will be used to purchase the preservation supplies required to fulfill recommendations made in a preservation needs assessment of the Bank Street College Archives. The assessment was funded by a NEH Preservation Assistance Grant and was performed in September 2011 by Angelina Altobellis of the Northeast Document Conservation Center. The Archives contains the historical and institutional records of the College and the evolution of progressive education in the US in the 20th century. Materials in the collection include official divisional administrative records, faculty and staff papers, audiovisual materials, photographs and artifacts. The archives encompass approximately 650 linear feet. The Bank Street College Archives are available for use by a range of researchers: local, national and international students, researchers, and authors.
