Edmond Historical Society & Museum (Edmond, OK 73034-3873)
Deborah Derby Baker (Project Director: May 2014 to February 2016)
EHS&M Collections Preservation Plan

Hiring an objects and a textile conservator to conduct a survey of the Edmond Historical Society & Museum’s collections and to develop a preservation plan for their long-term care.  Founded in 1887, the city of Edmond, Oklahoma, was a pioneer town founded at a Southern Kansas Railway stop.  The historical society holds more than 35,000 artifacts depicting the history of the town and surrounding region.  Collection items, such as textiles, household goods, furniture, and farm equipment, support a variety of exhibits and educational programming that attracts 15,000 visitors annually.

The Edmond Historical Society & Museum (ESH&M) collections currently encompass nearly 35,000 accessioned artifacts that include documents, photographs, large farm equipment and furniture. The collections detail life at the Edmond Station from its inception in 1887, the historic Land Run of 1889, illustrate the subsequent development of the pioneer town and illuminate the lives of the people who built and shaped the community. The museum is requesting $5,000 to assist with the completion of a collections preservation plan. The grant funds would be used to engage the services of conservators to evaluate the objects and textiles within the collections. The consultants will work with the Curator of Collections in developing a collection preservation plan that supports the long-term care of collections. The collection preservation plan will become part of the overall strategic plan that guides the board and staff in setting annual and long-range goals for the museum.
