Shawnee Tribe Archives Room Preservation Assessment

Hiring a consultant to undertake a preservation assessment and purchase of preservation supplies for a collection of photographs, maps, and language recordings documenting the Shawnee Tribe’s history, language, and culture.  The collections consists of 1,000 historic photographs, about 60 hours of Shawnee language recordings, about 100 hours of music recordings, 4-5 feet of language archives, and an archive of tribal rolls, government papers, and newsletters.  The collections are widely used by tribal members and scholars for exhibits, language research, and publications.  The consultant would also offer training for the staff to improve care of their collections.

The Shawnee Tribe requests $5,992.00 for a Preservation Assistance Grant to do a collections assessment, conduct an archives workshop and purchase archival supplies. The Tribe officially received its federal recognition in 2000 and has been collecting materials that document the culture and history of the Shawnee people since the 1980s. These collections include photographs, tribal documents, maps and video and recordings of fluent language speakers. They are vital to assisting with the Tribe’s language revitalization and cultural heritage programs. History scholars draw on the collection in order to tell the full story of Native American removal from eastern states. Anthropologists and sociologists use the collection to piece together the linguistic ties between language and culture. With NEH funding, the Tribe will contract with a preservation professional to conduct an in-depth assessment of the collection and its environment and train staff and volunteers on archival preservation.
