Workshop on the Preservation and Care of Photographic and Newspaper Collections

A preservation assessment and staff training related to the preservation and care of archival materials dealing with the history of this Catholic and historically black university.  The project would focus on the care of a collection of 30,000 photographic prints and negatives documenting the history of the university, and a complete run of the university’s student newspaper, the Xavier Herald, founded in 1925. A workshop would focus on the care and handling of collections during digitization and other elements of digital planning.

A workshop for the education and training of Xavier University of Louisiana Archives and Special Collections to assess the preservation of photographic and newspaper collections, educate staff in the care and handling of collections during digitalization, and to develop standards and best practices for digital preservation. The grant will provide for a consultant from LYRASIS, Leigh Grinstead, to review holdings and conduct a two-day workshop. The consultant will: design a survey to determine the level of understanding and readiness for digitalization, conduct a two-day workshop to interview staff and assess preservation needs, provide instruction on preservation issues regarding digitalization of collections, complete a report that includes recommendations for preservation of the photographic and newspaper collections, and provide an assessment of readiness, recommendations, and next steps to guide staff in creating a comprehensive digital plan.
