California Digital Newspaper Project, Phase Four

Digitization of 100,000 pages of California newspapers published between 1836 and 1922, as part of the state’s participation in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).

From 2005 to 2011 the California Digital Newspaper Project focused on providing coverage for major metropolitan areas, namely Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento and the Central Valley. For 2015-2017 we would like, for the first time, to submit to Chronicling America Gold Rush papers and ethnic and foreign-language newspapers. Published in mining towns throughout the Mother Lode and the far northern parts of the state, Gold Rush titles reflect the unique early history of California. We have a number of newspapers in French, German, Italian and Spanish, as well as English-language and bilingual papers marketed to ethnic communities, that reflect the diversity of the young state, all of which we are eager to digitize and make available.
