Alaska Division of Libraries, Archives, and Museums (Juneau, AK 99811-0571)
Anastasia L. Tarmann (Project Director: January 2016 to present)

Alaska Digital Newspaper Project

The digitization of 100,000 pages of historic Alaska newspapers published between 1866 and 1922 as part of the state’s participation in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).

The Alaska Division of State Libraries, Archives, and Museums requests $323,748 to select, digitize, and make available to the Library of Congress 100,000 pages of Alaskan newsprint published between 1866 and 1922. The Division holds the largest and most complete collection of Alaska newspapers on microfilm in the state, with virtually all known newspaper issues in microform. Approximately three hundred and twenty unique titles with pre-1923 content are available for digitization. An Alaska Digital Newspaper Program Advisory Committee consisting of scholars, newspaper publishers, and educators will select titles. For each title selected, the Division will create an essay of approximately 500 words describing the historical significance of the newspaper; an updated CONSER-level MARC record; and title, issue, and page-level metadata. Digital Divide Data will assist in creating metadata.
