Funds to support thorough investigation of Madison's records of proceedings at Federal Convention of 1787, using beta radiography, spectography and other scientific aids to identify and date changes in text believed to have been made in 1789, 1789-1819, and after 1819. ABSTRACT: Relates to Bicentennial, funds to support thorough investigation of Madison's records of proceedings at Federal Convention of 1787, using beta radiography, spectography and other scientific aids to identify and date changes in text believed to have been made in 1789, 1789-1819, and after 1819. All exisiting editions show changes to have been made in Madison's old age, when his political ideas had changed and his memory had begun to fade. Madison's record preeminent source for historians, political scientists and jurists on intent of framers of the Constitutuion and story of its development. Such usage subject to erroneous and misleading interpretation because no existing edition identifies and dates changes in language. Pertains to development of our fundamental law and therefore of greatest signficance for students of history, government and public affairs. Grantee has unique background in history and knowledge of scientific dating techniques as well as access to original documents.
