AMERICAN STATE COURTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES DURING THE LATE 19TH CENTURY

To study the growth and changes in legal doctrine held by state courts in regard to civil liberties. An investigation of the roots of our "civil libertarian tradition" will examine how state courts did or did not apply the 14th amendment, adopted in 1868 to enforce first amendment civil liberties. Existing literature will be evaluated, and areas needing further research will be outlined. The project will result in a book to be published by KTO Press.
