Virginia Division of Historic Landmarks (Richmond, VA 23219-2010)
Tucker Hill (Project Director: November 1977 to October 1990)
York River Fleet-Shipwreck Archaeological Project

To test and excavate the vessel from the remains of a fleet lost by the British in the final days before the American victory at the Battle of Yorktown, 1781. The artifacts retrieved will give an invaluable picture of the British shipbuilding and nautical practices, and the life of British seamen in the Revolutionary Period. Since the ships reportedly carried household belongings of several Yorktown citizens, the project will yield insights into the life-patterns, cultural habits, and daily routine of Virginia residents in 1781. One year of testing will be carried out, and after extensive analysis, the most intact and potentially informative wreck will be totally excavated during the next two years.
