Landscape Paintings of Herri met de Bles

To study and produce monograph on landscape paintings of Herri met de Bles, the most significant landscape painter in Flanders in generation before Peter Bruegel the Elder. ABSTRACT: Purpose of project to study and produce monograph on landscape paintings of Herr met de Bles (c. 1535-1570), the most significant landscape painter in Flanders in generation before Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Recent acquisition of his work by several American museums has encouraged growing interest in Bles, but no systematic study of his landscapes exists. Detailed examination of Bles' paintings has three objectives: review biographical data; produce catalogue of his paintings and account for sources and development of his style. Study of his original style, which combined closed observation of nature with poetic fantasy will illuminate the early history of European landscape tradition, particularly the works of Pieter Bruegel and contribute to understanding of Bles' unique vision. Preliminary research and acquisition of photographs begun; next phase to be conducted in Europe in summer 1970 visiting museums and art historical institutes possessing works and information about Bles. Funds for salary, transportation, living expenses, photographs.
