Project to collect and catalogue all hillbilly/country music recording produced by one of the major recording companies of the period, 1923-47, prior to introduction of LP recordings. ABSTRACT: Project to collect and catalogue all hillbilly/country music recording produced by one of the major recording companies of the period, 1923-47, prior to introduction of LP recordings. Project will conserve data that will otherwise soon be lost. Sound recordings are a serious communication medium, relevant to understanding much older American music as well as an important source of folklore and culture. Popular music reflects the character and lifestyle of America. Project will produce important source of data on American society and culture for historians, anthropologists and musicologists. Funds to be used to gather material, recordings, production data, bibographical information, background information, and to interview artist and personnel from period. Grantee organization a group of expert folklorists and students of popular culture at Folklore and Mythology Center, UCLA. Collection will be house at UCLA Folklore and Mythology Center as part of John Edwards Memorial Foundation Collection.
