Thomas Jarvis, Minister to Brazil 1885-1889

Project to write biography and edit Volume II of papers of Thomas Jarvis, Minister to Brazil (1885-1889), for publication by North Carolina Department of Archives and History. ABSTRACT: Project to write biography and edit Volume II of papers of Thomas Jarvis, Minister to Brazil (1885-1889), for publication by North Carolina Department of Archives and History. PI has already published Volume I of Jarvis' papers up to 1882, covering the period he served as governor of North Carolina (1879-1885). Summer research in Rio de Janeiro to gain access to materials necessary for study. Years 1885-1889 critical ones in Brazil's history (liberal republican ideas maturing and Empire to end in 1889; anti-slavery movement growing; technology advancing). Little has been published regarding U.S.-Brazilian relations during this period. Study of important role Jarvis played at time will lead to greater understanding of past patterns of US involvement in Latin America's largest country and history of US foreign policy formation. Funds for two months salary and per diem.
