Casas Viejas Project

Project to study how a particular event in the recent past, an Anarchist uprising in 1933 in Spain, and the peasants' perception of that event, relates to the iediological system of an Andalusian village. ABSTRACT: Project to study how a particular event in the recent past, an Anarchist uprising in 1933 in Spain, and the peasants' perception of that event, relates to the iediological system of an Andalusian village. By contrasting historical record with oral tradition concerning the uprising, the church, banditry, land tenure, working conditions, rise of anarchist movent, Civil War and its aftermath, PI aims to clarify historical record and provide greater understanding of revolutionary political movements in general as well as explore mechanisms for controlling social tension. Uprising had far-reaching consequences, one of the events which brought down the Spanish government and led to the Civil War; was covered in detail by newspapers and magaiznes throughout the coutry and subsequently by an official inquiry. PI, graduate assistant and informant to live in village for one year, collecting interviews, tapes, still photos, 16 mm film to suppliment previous researcy by PI under Ford Foundation grant.
