Rodin's Cathedral Project

Grantee to visit and photograph the medieval French cathedrals and study the original source material available to French 19th century sculptor Auguste Rodin. ABSTRACT: Continuation of H69-I-3 (3195), research grant to accomplished sculptor to visit and photograph the medieval French _cathedrals and study the original source material available to_ 19th century sculptor Auguste Rodin; to study previously unpublished notes, drawings and letters at the Rodin Museum in Paris. By identifying and photographic original medieval sources for Rodin's work and publishing his notes and sketches, most of which have been unavailable to scholars because of the close-handedness of the curator of the Rodin Museum, grantee will make major contribution to understanding of Rodin. Aim to produce illustrated book of critical essays demonstrating Rodin's direct, non-theoretical method of study, his contribution to our general appreciation of medieval art and its influence on his work. Funds for photography and living expenses in France.
