Research project, for projected two-volume publication, into the economic and social history of the Jews in India and adjacent Asian territoris from the 16th century on. ABSTRACT: Research project, for projected two-volume publication, into the economic and social history of the Jews in India and adjacent Asian territoris from the 16th century on. Study focuses on role played by Jews as merchants, agents, interpreters and diplomats in the service of various East India Companies (Portuguese, Dutch, English) and subsequent impact of these companies on Jewish life and history in India. Research based on the wealth of unpublished Arabic, Persian, Hebrew and European primary sources housed in Indian and European archives. Heretofore unexplored field of Jewish and Indian historical scholarship will contribute greatly to economic history and studies of Jewish, Islamic and Indian civilizataions in general.
