Thomas Harriot Project

Project to make available photocopies of the unpublished manuscripts of Thomas Harriot (1560-1621), first scientist to visit North America, in a seminar for scholars to share knowledge and edit portions of the manuscripts. ABSTRACT: Project to make available to American scholars the unpublished and scattered manuscripts of Thomas Harriot (1560-1621) by obtaining phototcopies of manuscripts and holding a seminar in spring of 1971 at University of Delaware for American, British and Continental scholars to share knowledge and gain assistance in editing portions of manuscripts. Harriot first scientist to visit North America and to assess its resources and study its aboriginal people. Lived at major point in English history which coincided with the beginning of the scientific revolution. As a friend of poets, dramatists, philosophers, historian and politicians, he was among those responsible for developing the spirit of modern critical thought. Project will collect Harriot's unpublished manuscripts, make them available in photocopies to scholars for research and editing for the first time. Important contribution to intellectual history and history of science. Funds for PI's salary, supplies, travel, participant expenses (travel, room and board, honoraria).
