Garcilaso Project

Garcilaso de Vega (1501?-1536) first major Spanish Renaissance poet, introduced into Spanish most of the classical and Italian genres of poetry (sonnet, canzone, ode, elegy, epistle, ect.). Had and continues to have great influence on Spanish poetry. Sixteenth century annotations and commentaries on his poetry not available in any modern edition. Considerable research on Garcilaso in 19th and 20th centuries, but much is published in widely scattered journals, not readily available to scholars. Project to prepare compendium of all available information, historical, analytical and critical which would be of use to the advanced student or researcher working on Garcilaso's poetry and Spanish Reanissance literature in general. Introduction (bilographical data, brief history of the Gar. text and criticism), an introduction to each poetic genre, introduction to each poem with commentary and analyses--both historical and critical--section by section and line by line. PI has published critical edition of Garcilaso's complete works. Much research for project already completed. Funds for PI salary, to free him from teaching duties to collect, duplicate, study and condense material for publication.
