Papers of Daniel Webster

To edit for publication a selection from voluminous correspondence, legal and diplomatic papers and speeches of Daniel Webster (1782-1852). No more than a quarter of the available Webster papers has ever been published, and then in limited editions, inadequately edited. Probable that no man of his time, "Middle" period of American history, had greater impact on the development of American institutions. Direction of his thinking and his efforts during 40 years on public stage was the direction in which the nation itself grew. His was authentic voice of American nationalism at a time when the weight of authority lay on the side of state sovereignty (pre-Civil War period). As lawyer his reasoning persists in a score of leading cases that established still valid precedents for constitutuional interpretation. As Sect'y. of State he made enduring contribution to American diplomacy. Documents to be selected in terms of their historical signficance, will be placed in context by the editor with such annotations as the modern student may require, and will be published in about 25 volumes, without subsidy, by Harvard Press. Edition noteworthy contribution to historical resource material, will be of worth to general reader and to the advanced student of American history. Funds for PI summer slary, salaries for assistants, supplies, travel, consultant fees.
