Violence in American Literature

Project to examine works and authors from Melville, Poe, Hawthorne and the Southwest humorist through Wright, Kesey, Lowell, Mailer in order to shed light on traditions of violoence, traditional attitudes toward violence as evidenced in wide time-span in American writing. ABSTRACT: Project to examine works and authors from Melville, Poe, Hawthorne and Southwest humorists through Wright, Kesey, Lowell, Mailer in order to shed light on traditions of violence, traditional attitudes towards violence as evidenced in wide timespan in American writing. Social scientists and historians tend to focus on the external dimensions of violence; this project calls attention to the internal, personal sources, connection between violence and problems of personal, racial and national identity, and to the connection between violence and the modern social and intellectual climate of opinion. Plan to conduct research, consult with social scientists working on the problem of violence at the Brandeis Lemberg Institute. Funds for PI partial salary, travel in US, per diem during research trip.
