Opera Company of Boston, Inc. (Boston, MA)
Sarah Caldwell (Project Director: August 1969 to present)

First Production of Opera Montezuma

Project to identify contemporary artifacts and other artistic and historic items in Mexico for incorporation in Boston Opera Company's production of Roger Session's opera, Montezuma. ABSTRACT: A mass of historical material is presented rapidly in the course of the opera. Purpose of research is to identify contemporary artifacts and other artistic and historic items in Mexico related to the story line. By incorporating them in the presentation of the opera the audience would be better able to understand the theme and conflicts in the opera's story. Boston Opera Co. has national reputation for striking out in new, adventurous directions in presentation of opera. With research help, Roger Session's Montezume will embody a basically true and artistically imaginative treatment of history of colonial conquest in a neighboring country. Result of this production may persuade other directors to mount productions of the same opera.
