PI to write a history of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland in the 19th century, 1780-1918 ABSTRACT: There is no history of Ireland's Roman Catholic Church, and no meaningful history of the Irish at home or abroad can be written without a consideration of the Church. The Irish Church as the mother church of English-speaking Catholicism in the Empire and in the US. PI has completed 10 years of extensive research in Dublin, London and Rome on proposed 5-volume history, and leading scholar in the field of Irish history. Study important to understanding of 19th century Irish history and society. Will also contribute to history of Great Britain in this period and to the history of those areas in which Irishmen settled, including the United States. Any study of Ireland in the 19th century, particularly a study of so central an institutuion as the Church, contributes to our understanding of nationalism. May add to understanding of recent religious strife in Northern Ireland. Funds for travel to Rome and per diem for 75 days.
