Urban Change in Brazil, 1880-1920

In Brazil, as in many countries today, the urban sectors play an increasingly important role in the life of the nation. However, very little is known of urban development in Latin America before 1940. In Brazil, the largest and most important of Latin American nations, a variety of radical movements and radical groups emerged in the urban areas in the late 19th century. Nationalist and nativist groups, incipient labor organizations and even some of the European immigrants challenged existing political and economic structures. This study of the emergence and struggle of these unknown radical groups and their inter-relationships in a changing urban context is based primarily on documentary sources never before utilitzed and located in Brazil. Resulting book will help us understand contemporary forces and problems in modernizing Brazil, and provide basis for comparing urban problems in developing countries and established countries.
