The Mechanical Spirit in Russia 1860s-1930s

To study neurophysiology and psychology in Russia from the 1860s to the 1930s, with special attention to the social context. The main effort is to discover why a purely physiological approach to psychology was especially strong in Russia, and why its original connection with political ideology tended to dissolve in the early 20th century, only to be forcefully reasserted in the 1920s and 1930s. An effort will also be made to study the interaction of the mechanical spirit and the literary imagination.
