Upper Paleolilthic Cave Art: New Analytic Interpretive Methods

Continued development and use of spectral and microscopic techniques for analysis of Upper Paleolithic symbol and image, particularly in the painted and engraved caves of Europe. Research represents the first methodological, systematic analysis of these images since their validation almost a century ago. The project, conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, France, institutes a new stage in study of the humanistic contents in early Homo sapiens culture. Data has already altered prior concepts concerning the meaning and complexity of this art. Research is fundamental to the study of man, civilization, art, and the historic uses of cognitive symbol systems and strategies. Full publication is assured.
