Papers of John Marshall

Completion of volume 12, the final volume of the edition of the papers of John Marshall (1755-1835), American statesman and jurist. (24 months)

This is the first edition of the correspondence and papers of John Marshall (1755-1835), the statesman and jurist who served as chief justice of the United States, 1802-1835. The edition will consist of twelve volumes, with the final volume containing supplementary documents. Eleven volumes have been published to date. The first four volumes cover Marshall's early career as a student, soldier, lawyer, legislator, land speculator, and diplomat. The fifth volume is a topical presentation of selected law cases, 1784-1800. Volumes 6-12 document the Supreme Court years. The goal of the proposed grant period is to complete Volume 12, the final volume of the edition.
