The Papers of George Washington
Scholarly work on 12 volumes of the letterpress edition of the Papers of George Washington: volumes 15-20 of the Revolutionary War series, volumes 13-16 of the Presidential series, and volumes 1-2 of the Financial Papers series.
The project is engaged in producing a comprehensive annotated edition of the public and private papers of George Washington, including for the first time the letters and other documents that he received as well as those written by him. The work is being done in series corresponding to significant segments of Washington's life and papers. Having edited and published Washington's "Diaries" and the "Colonial", "Confederation", and "Retirement Series" of his correspondence, the editors are now focusing on completing the larger "Revolutionary War" and "Presidential Series", and they have begun work on Washington's "Financial Papers". By the end of the current grant period in April 2004, fifty-four of an estimated total of ninety-one volumes will have been completed. The edition is fundamentally important because of the central, indispensable role that Washington played in the creation of the American republic and its system of government as commander in chief of the Continental army, president of the Constitutional Convention, and first president of the United States. Washington's voluminous papers also provide an invaluable window into American society at all levels during the latter half of the eighteenth century, including domestic, business, and agricultural affairs as well as western development and social life.
