The Papers of James Madison
Completion of Volume 6 in the Presidential Series, Volume 8 in the Secretary of State Series of the Papers of James Madison, and Volume 1 of the Retirement Series, and continued editorial work on subsequent volumes of all three series. (24 months)
The purpose of the project is to assemble and edit for publication the complete papers and recorded actions of James Madison, "Father of the Constitution" and fourth president of the United States. The edition is arranged in four series, each one dealing with a specific phase of Madison's life and career. Currently the project is editing the records of Madison's terms as secretary of state (1801-1809) and president of the United States (1809-1817) as well as those of his retirement years (1817-1836).
