South Carolina Blacks and the Civilian Conservation Corps: An Anomaly in the Southern Experience, 1933-1942

To investigate why South Carolina Blacks seemed to have gained greater access into the Civilian Conservation Corps than Blacks elsewhere in the South. The implications in terms of race relations, civil-military relations, demography and Democratic Party Politics are considerable. Using computerized statistical techniques, a review of state and Federal archival holdings, as well as an oral history program to interview surviving black veterans of the CCC will form the basis of a definitive mongraphic case study.
