A Reevaluation of Gabriela Mistral Two Decades After Her Death

To hold a conference reevaluating the work of Latin America's poet Gabriela Mistral, whose private library was recently bequeathed to Barnard College. The aim of the conference is to encourage further use of this unique research tool. The life and work of Gabriela Mistral serve as a central focus for literary, historical and sociological facets of Latin American Studies. Scholars in this field, as well as those concerned with women's contributions to literature and culture, need to acquaint themselves with the new source material now available. A reassessment of the poet in light of these interests will establish new directions for Mistral criticism as well as for the scholarly impact of the collection.
