Tabari Translation Project

To support the preparation of an index to al-Tabari's monumental 39-volume history of the world up to the year 915 C.E.

This proposal is for funding to complete the translation and annotation of the Tabari Translation Project, and the preparation of a comprehensive index for the entire 39-volume set. Al-Tabari's monumental Ta'rikh (History) is the most important universal history ever written in the Islamic world, starting with Creation and extending to the year 915 C.E. It is being translated by an international group of scholars for the first time in its entirety in any Western language, with philological, historical, and topographical annotations to benefit students, scholars, and non-specialists. The work has been divided into 39 volumes of about 200 pages of original text and each has been translated and annotated by an established scholar in the field of Arabic or Islamic studies. The index will enable the set to serve as a valuable research tool in all relevant academic fields. To date, 37 volumes have been published. The present application is for the translation and annotation of Volume V in two parts, the publication of volume XXXIX, and the compilation and publication of a comprehensive index, four volumes in all.
