Popular Thought in Post-Socialist China, a Conference

A scholarly conference on popular thought in China during the last ten years, with particular emphasis on methods that can be used to achieve a full picture of Chinese culture.

A conference of 17-19 scholars on popular thought in post-socialist China, with attention to selected examples of the new social groups and cultural forms that, although poorly understood at present, will shape Chinese patterns well into the next century. The focus is less on outward changes than on the meanings they have for those affected. Because social taboos and continuing government restriction make some kinds of investigation much more difficult than others, part of our aim is to advance and hone methods by which a full and balanced picture can be achieved.
