The First English Edition of Leibniz's "Protogaea"

To support the first English edition of Gottfried Leibniz's PROTOGAEA.

G. W. Leibniz's "Protogaea," an important work from the late seventeenth century, has never appeared in English translation. We aim to produce the first English edition of "Protogaea." It is a difficult text, filled with seventeenth-century religious imagery, complex philosophical argumentation, bold scientific hypotheses, and the peculiar terminology of seventeenth-century mining and smelting operations. But the spectacular breadth of Leibniz's achievement, which complicates translation and interpretation, also encourages collaboration among scholars from entirely different fields and disciplines. We have assembled such a group to work on this project. Moreover, we are employing innovative internet technologies to involve other scholars and non-specialists from around the world in the process of translation, annotation, and interpretation. In short, the project seeks to explore new forms of collaborative translation even as it makes the challenging and important work accessible to English speakers for the first time.
