Early Modern Japanese Literature
The translation into English of a variety of works written in Japan from 1600 to 1920 to be published as a three-volume anthology that is accessible to scholars, students and general readers. (36 months)
This proposal seeks funding for a three year collaborative project to promote research, teaching, and general appreciation of early modern Japanese literature (1600-1920's), which is little known outside Japan. The project plans to create a network of specialists, prepare a three-volume anthology in English, and hold international conferences in Tokyo (spring 2005) and in Bloomington (after the completion of the three-year grant term). Divided into three stages, the project will include all together 50 researcher-translators.
