First Impressions: The Cultural History of Print in Imperial China (8th-14th centuries)

Travel and accommodation expenses for six non-U.S. scholars from Asia, Europe, and Australia whose research will make a significant contribution to this conference on book culture and printing in China from the eighth to the fourteenth centuries. (12 months)

I am applying for $7,500 to supplement the grant already obtained from the American Council of Learned Societies for a conference to be held in June 2007 on book culture and printing in China, 8th-14th centuries, resulting in a published volume. The subject of book culture in China has increasingly attracted the efforts of scholars working in Chinese studies, and the new research presented at this conference will stimulate further work and invite dialogues with those working on book cultures of other parts of the world. We have invited six non-U.S. scholars from Asia, Europe, and Australia, whose research would significantly enrich this conference and need the NEH funds to help pay for their travel and accommodation expenses.
