The Sound of Silk

Production of a documentary about the Silk Road Ensemble, a collective of virtuoso musicians from more than 20 countries in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

The Project seeks support for the production of "The Sound of Silk," a film by acclaimed director Morgan Neville. "The Sound of Silk" will document the life of the Silk Road Ensemble, a collective of virtuoso musicians from more than 20 countries, formed by cellist Yo-Yo Ma to bridge cultural boundaries through performance, commissions, recordings, creative educational initiatives and cross-disciplinary collaborations. This character-driven documentary will explore the Ensemble's unique style of cross- cultural communication and the deep values instilled by Yo-Yo Ma that have informed these musicians' careers and lives. Through the personal narratives of these extraordinary musicians, their uniquely collaborative creative process and their powerful performances, "The Sound of Silk" will make visible the themes of musical cosmopolitanism, cultural mobility, and agency of the individual artist that underpin their phenomenal success in bridging cultures and crossing boundaries.
