Una Sensible Perdida/We Regret the Loss

Development of a one-hour documentary on the life and legacy of Cuban writer José Lezama Lima.

"We Regret the Loss" is a 60-minute documentary film biography of Cuban writer José Lezama Lima, one of Latin America's most important poets, essayists and novelists of the twentieth century, whose place in literature only continues to grow with new generations in Cuba, Latin America and across the world. The film ventures into the 30s and 40s as it reconstructs the life and work of José Lezama Lima and then moves forward into the 90s to explore his legacy, but the dramatic action takes place in the 1960s and 70s, when the eyes of the world turned toward Cuba for its promise of a socialist humanist alternative to the Stalinist Soviet bloc. Caught between his need for self-expression and the growing restrictions on political and sexual freedom by the Cuban government, Lezama Lima suffered censorship, ostracism, penury and the pain of family separation, as he was forbidden to leave his island in the 1970s.
