Gone but not Forgotten: Poland and the Recovery of its Jewish Past

Development of a 90-minute documentary about the history of anti-Semitism and its rejection in Poland.

This film tells the story of a number of non-Jewish Polish who responded to the Polish communist regime’s open embrace of anti-Semitism in 1968 by becoming “anti-anti-Semites” and challenging the ethno-nationalist prejudice that for nearly a century had dominated much of Polish political and social life. Perhaps most remarkably, it recounts how in the course of Poland’s fractious transformation to democracy, these one-time dissidents spread their philo-Semitic message and managed to accomplish what once seemed impossible: they have influenced a younger generation of Poles to reject the pervasive ethno-nationalism and anti-Semitism of their forbears, and implicitly compelled the rest of the world to re-examine some of their bedrock attitudes toward Poland and Poles.
