The Power of Story in Communities

A summer youth program that links nationally aligned summer reading standards to interactive, thematically linked opera programming.

Our program, The Power of Story in Communities, is a summer program that will align with the collaborative summer learning program’s annual summer reading themes with an exploration in the humanities. Through a collaborative partnership between libraries and the Santa Fe Opera, this program will utilize vocal artists, interactive demonstrations on set design, costumes, make-up, and wigs led by Young Technicians—a high school mastery program at the Opera—and interdisciplinary workshops led by Opera teaching artists that will result in an artistic expression of the participants in line with stimulating reading linked to the summer program theme and reading lists. In a series of one hour workshops, this program will serve approximately 150 inter-generational participants in three New Mexico communities within the pilot year and will expand to approximately 300 and 500 participants across six and ten communities in years two and three, respectively.
