Revitalization of Native American Languages
Native-led organizations and programs to foster Native language retention, reclamation, acquisition,
revitalization, and immersion.
The cooperative agreement will set up a
partnership between the NEH and First Nations Development Institute to provide
structured re-grant funding to tribes and Native American-led nonprofit
organizations, including educational institutions. Eligible projects will have
either existing language immersion programs or will be poised to scale up
current language programs to the immersion model. Twelve subgrantees will receive
ca. $90,000 for twelve months during each of the project’s three years to support
curriculum development, technology access associated with language, growing the
pool of language teachers, and more. Individual projects may receive more than
one year of funding. In addition to financial support, First Nations
Development Institute plans to convene subgrantees, other language immersion
experts, and stakeholders to share best practices, network, and begin to form a
community of practice with Native communities at the center of language
revitalization.
