Third Coast Conversations: Dialogues about Water
Implementation
of a series of public programs across Michigan that would address the
historical, cultural, and environmental impact of water.
Third Coast Conversations: Dialogues about Water in Michigan, will be a series of statewide public conversations taking place in 31 communities over two years that focus on the cultural, social, historical, and environmental factors that connect Michigan’s people to their water. The project will be led by the Michigan Humanities Council in collaboration with their strong network of partner organizations on the ground. The conversation-based project will allow MHC to augment Water/Ways, a Smithsonian Institution Museum on Main Street travelling exhibit that MHC is already bringing to six rural communities in Michigan with populations of 2,000 people or less as part of our regularly scheduled programming. The exhibit topic, as well as ongoing issues concerning drinking water quality in Flint and other communities, presents a unique opportunity to focus attention on the importance of water as Michigan’s most valuable natural resource.

2009-10 Great Michigan Read
To support a variety of activities for the 2009-2010 Great Michigan Read, including reader's guides, a teacher's guide, grants for speakers, newspaper inserts, radio and television features and other promotional material. The selected book is "Stealing Buddha's Dinner" by Bich Minh Nguyen.
The 2009-10 Great Michigan Read is a humanities initiative encouraging the entire state to read the same book. Targeting young adults to seniors, The Great Michigan Read aspires to make reading more accessible and appealing, engaging Michiganians with literature unique to the Great Lakes State while encouraging them to learn more about their state, their history, and their society. The selected title, "Stealing Buddha's Dinner," by Bich Minh Nguyen, chronicles the author's migration from Vietnam in 1975 and her coming of age in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the 1980s. Along the way, she struggles to construct her own cultural identity from a menagerie of uniquely American influences. The Council's programming will encourage people to read Stealing Buddha's Dinner and use the text to explore three themes: immigration stories, cultural understanding, and contemporary history.

Bridging Communities
A special grant program that focuses on national themes and events through the lens of Michigan history.
The Michigan Humanities Council will issue an RFP for proposals that recognize Michigan’s identity as an “inclusive identity,” i.e., one that has faced questions of difference throughout its ethnic, political, economic, creative, labor, and regional relationships. Proposals will address Michigan’s struggle with questions of identity by engaging the tensions that make Michigan a microcosm of forces that shape America. The following terms should anchor proposals: urban vs. rural; local vs. state; state vs. federal; ethnicity; regionalism; identity; conflict; federalism, and nationalism.
