Noting the Tunes of Seventeenth - Century Broadside Ballads: The English Broadside Ballad Archive (EBBA) (Article)
Title: Noting the Tunes of Seventeenth - Century Broadside Ballads: The English Broadside Ballad Archive (EBBA)
Author: Eric Nebeker
Author: Patricia Fumerton
Abstract: This essay focuses on the ways a digital archive of printed, pre-1701 English broadside ballads facilitates and complicates the orality that folklorists have traditionally seen in opposition to print. The English Broadside Ballad Archive (EBBA) recaptures the multi-media nature of early broadside ballads—as text, art, and song—providing recordings of all extant tunes for the printed ballads and, in doing so, capturing the ease and difficulties of matching text to tune.

Resinging History: ‘Greensleeves’ Broadside Ballads from Late - Elizabethan to Restoration England (Conference Paper/Presentation)
Title: Resinging History: ‘Greensleeves’ Broadside Ballads from Late - Elizabethan to Restoration England
Author: Patricia Fumerton
Abstract: This talk explores why the tune Greensleeves became one of the most popular tunes in the Elizabethan period as well as of the anti-Interregnum period. The question is: how is that a broadside ballad expressive of forlorn courtly love (first registered in the Stationers' Company in the 1580s) became transformed into the voice of vicious, often scatological, political attacks against Cromwell and celebrations of the Restoration of monarchy? What makes the tune and context of Greensleeves so adaptable?
